Gruul can be found in Gruul's Lair, in the Slagworks wing of the Blackrock Foundry raid. Players may choose to defeatOregorger or Gruul first in the wing, but both must be defeated to gain access to the third Slagworks boss, the Blast Furnace.

This Blackrock Foundry raid strategy guide provides an overview of killing Gruul for raid leaders as well as specific tips for tanks, healers, and dps. It also includes information on harmful trash, and screenshots of harmful abilities.

This guide provides an in-depth look at Normal and Heroic difficulties, with summaries of changes in Mythic and Looking for Raid difficulties.

Loot and Rewards

This loot overview helps you plan out your Seal of Tempered Fate Bonus Rolls. Check out ourGruul database page to filter loot by difficulty as well as by loot specialization.

LFR (650)

Normal, Heroic, Mythic (665, 680, 695)

Elemental Rune for the legendary questline can be obtained while on  Might of the Elemental Lords.

Each Blackrock Foundry boss, as well as Highmaul bosses, has a unique achievement that counts towards  Glory of the Draenor Raider. This rewards  Gorestrider GronnlingGruul's special achievement is  The Iron Price.

There are achievements for killing each Blackrock Foundry boss, as well as Highmaul bosses, on Mythic difficulty. Killing every boss rewards  Mythic Draenor Raider, which allows you to place a special monument in your Garrison.

Notable Trash Mobs

Since Gruul can be accessed as the first boss of a wing, players must pass through the trash in the Workshop to get to him. This trash is shared by the first bosses of each wing, and consists of the following enemy types:

Tanks should pull carefully in this room as the AoE damage is very heavy while either an Ogron Hauler or the Iron Slag-Shapers are alive. Try to avoid pulling other packs with the Hauler, and to pull small packs of the remaining enemies. Use crowd-control abilities to reduce the extreme AoE damage of the Flamebinder/Slag-Shaper/Guardian packs.

Chain Volley deals heavy AoE damage

The final pack of trash before Gruul is very dangerous and will require extensive AoE healing and crowd control. This pack includes two Gronnling Laborers, four Iron Journeyman adds, and a mini-boss named Karnor the Cruel.

  • Iron Journeyman deals heavy melee damage to the tank, but no raid/AoE damage, and is fairly inconsequential.

  • Gronnling Laborers will frequently use  Gronnling Smash, dealing very heavy, periodic raid-wide AoE damage.

  • Karnor the Cruel will use  Chain Volley and  Killing Spree to deal heavy raid-wide AoE damage.

When  Chain Volley and two  Gronnling Smashes align, the AoE damage is very high, and healers will need to use cooldowns to keep the raid alive. Unfortunately,  Chain Volley is instant, but players can - and should - stun the Gronnling during  Gronnling Smash to reduce incoming damage.

Karnor is vulnerable to stuns as well, so ideally tanks should keep these enemies close together, and the raid should coordinate AoE stun abilities for each set of  Gronnling Smash.

Gruul Tips & Strategy

Petrified

Gruul is a simple and straightforward single-target encounter, and is a reprise of an encounter in Gruul's Lair from The Burning Crusade expansion, including the same core mechanic of Petrify/ Shatter.

About 30 seconds into the fight, and approximately every minute thereafter, Gruul will cast  Petrifying Slam, which will choose eight random players in the raid.

  • The chosen players are knocked back and will gain  Petrify, which accumulates one stack per second.

  • Each stack reduces players' movement speed by 20%, and at 5 stacks, players gain  Petrified, and are immobilized and incapacitated.

  • Gruul will  Shatter the  Petrified players, dealing heavy damage to these players and anyone within 8 yards of them.

  • Players must quickly react to  Petrify, and move away from the raid and away from each other.

  • Personal damage reduction cooldowns can be used before players are fully  Petrified, to assist in mitigating  Shatter damage.

Inferno Slice must be split amongst several raid members

Another central mechanic of the new Gruul encounter is  Inferno Slice. Gruul will attack a tank with this ability, dealing an extremely large amount of damage that is split evenly between all players in front of Gruul, and debuffing all affected players with a moderate DoT.

  • The tank must point Gruul at a pile of players to share the damage and survive.

  • The  Inferno Slice DoT lasts for 30 seconds and will stack, dealing additional damage if refreshed.

  •  Inferno Slice occurs about every 15 seconds, so players can safely soak alternating Inferno Slice casts.

  • Split the raid into two groups, one on either side of the boss.

  • Tanks should face Gruul towards one group for the first  Inferno Slice, and towards the other group for the second

Gruul will also aim  Overhead Smash at random players, which creates a narrow fissure in the ground in front of him and will knock back and deal heavy damage to any player caught in its effect.

Step out of Cave In zones

About two minutes into the fight, and approximately every two minutes thereafter, Gruul will enter a  Destructive Rampage, becoming untankable and casting four back-to-back Overhead Smashes. Players must try to avoid damage from these, as this should be a low-damage period to allow healers to catch up on tank and raid healing.

Gruul also attacks the tanks with  Overwhelming Blows, which deals heavy damage to all players within 10 yards and leaves them more vulnerable to further  Overwhelming Blowsdamage. Tanks must make sure that this attack does not happen while Gruul is faced into the raid for  Inferno Slice; by taunting quickly or rapidly moving to drag Gruul away from the raid as soon as  Inferno Slice occurs.

Finally, Gruul will frequently cause  Cave In near random players in the room, causing a small zone of lingering AoE damage. Players must move out of the  Cave In without jeopardizing their ability to soak  Inferno Slice.

Tank Responsibilities

Aim Overwhelming Blows away from raid

Damage-Dealer Responsibilities

Healer Responsibilities

Shatter deals damage to nearby players

Looking For Raid Difficulty

On Looking For Raid difficulty, the  Overwhelming Blows mechanic does not exist. The only debuff the tanks must manage is Inferno Strike; trading the boss after 3 stacks will keep tank damage fairly low.

The rest of the raid can stack in a single group for  Inferno Slice, since the attack and subsequent DoT do vastly reduced damage. The stacks will reset during each  Destructive Rampage, so healing will remain manageable.

Shatter deals a much smaller amount of damage in this difficulty. While affected players should still spread out, it is unlikely to wipe the raid if a handful of players fail to do so.

Mythic Difficulty

Avoid the Flare paths:

Green areas are safe from Flare

Mythic difficulty introduces one new mechanic:  Flare.

  • There are several furnaces on the perimeter of Gruul's encounter area, and periodically two of the furnaces will spit out small fireballs that travel in a straight line until reaching the opposite side of the room. If the  Flare passes through or near a player, it will deal that player heavy damage and leave a debuff that will cause the player to take 20% additional fire damage.

  • This can make  Inferno Slice fatal, so a player affected by this debuff cannot soak  Inferno Slice until the debuff expires.

  • Fortunately, the  Flares can only follow certain pre-defined paths, so the two Inferno Slice groups can position themselves such that they will never have to move to avoid the  Flare.

  • Tanks are likely to have to move occasionally when  Flares pass directly through the boss, and players will still need to be aware of  Flare paths when spreading out for  Petrify or moving to avoid  Overhead Smash and  Cave In mechanics.

In addition to  Flare, Mythic Gruul will affect every player with  Petrify, rather than affecting only a small subset of the raid.

  • Players must coordinate to spread out quickly, possibly even pre-determining a spread pattern to eliminate mistakes, and movement speed boosts like  Stampeding Roar will assist in spreading quickly.

  • Since  Shatter does an extremely high amount of damage, damage reduction CDs should be used here in case any players make mistakes in positioning, and healing throughput CDs should be used to prepare the raid for the next  Inferno Slice after a  Shatter.
